NEW Carpool Rules on 6 Bridges
Carpool rules are changing on 6 of the Bay Area bridges starting January 1, 2026.
- On these six bridges:
- Vehicles must have 3 or more people to qualify for the 50% toll discount
- Vehicles with 2 people and a FasTrak Flex set to “2” can use the carpool lane to save time, but are not eligible for the toll discount
- Carpool-eligible vehicles (3 or more people, motorcycles, 2 people in a 2-seat vehicle) must use a FasTrak Flex toll tag set to “3+” and be in the marked carpool lane to get the toll discount
- There are no changes to the carpool rules on the Bay Bridge and Golden Gate Bridge
NEW I-80 Express Lanes
New Solano County Express Lanes from I-505 to Red Top Road in Fairfield. Coming December 2025.
- I-80 Between I-505 and Red Top Road
- Tolling 5 am-8 pm, 7 days/week
- FasTrak toll tag required to use the lanes
- Toll-free travel for 3-person carpools, 2 people in 2-seat vehicles and motorcycles with a FasTrak Flex toll tag set to “3+”
- Half-price tolls for 2-person carpools with a FasTrak Flex toll tag set to “2”

A FasTrak Flex toll tag is the only way to receive carpool discounts on the Antioch, Benicia-Martinez, Carquinez, Dumbarton, Richmond-San Rafael and San Mateo-Hayward bridges and in Bay Area Express Lanes.

Go to BayAreaFasTrak.org to set up an account and order your FasTrak Flex toll tag. Or pickup your Flex tag in person at a Bay Area FasTrak retail location or at the FasTrak Walk-In Center at 375 Beale Street in San Francisco.

Setting the occupancy on your FasTrak Flex is the only way to get carpool toll discounts in Bay Area Express Lanes and, starting January 1, 2026, on the Antioch, Benicia-Martinez, Carquinez, Dumbarton, Richmond-San Rafael and San Mateo-Hayward bridges. Before you start driving, set the tag to match the number of people in your vehicle. It’s as easy as 1-2-3!
Tag Settings
Bridges
Solo drivers may not use bridge carpool lanes.
Vehicles using the carpool lanes on the Antioch, Benicia-Martinez, Carquinez, Dumbarton, Richmond-San Rafael and San Mateo-Hayward bridges with a Flex tag set at “1” will be charged the full toll amount even if occupancy requirements are met.
Bay Area Express Lanes
Solo drivers pay full price in express lanes.
Bridges
2 people in the car? Set the Flex tag to “2” and drive in the carpool lanes on the Antioch, Benicia-Martinez, Carquinez, Dumbarton, Richmond-San Rafael and San Mateo-Hayward bridges with no toll discount.
On the Bay Bridge, only 2-seat vehicles carrying 2 people are allowed to use the carpool lane.
The Golden Gate Bridge does not allow vehicles with only 2 people in the carpool lane.
Bay Area Express Lanes
On 580 and 680 express lanes, vehicles with 2 or more occupants travel FREE. In all other Bay Area Express Lanes, vehicles receive a 50% discount.
Bridges
During posted carpool hours, vehicles with 3 or more people, motorcycles, and 2-seat vehicles carrying 2 people get a 50% toll discount when they use a Flex tag set at “3+” on the Antioch, Benicia-Martinez, Carquinez, Dumbarton, Richmond-San Rafael and San Mateo-Hayward bridges.
No need to set the tag for Golden Gate Bridge or Bay Bridge discounts.
